Hi, Iām Erin Shaw.
I make art from the in-between. The spaces where stories overlap, where tension hums beneath the surface, and where humor and solemnity share the same breath.
About Me
I am a painter of borderlands ā the spaces between worlds. As a visual storyteller and the child of an Oklahoma farm, I till the rich soil of dichotomy through layered color, iconography, and narrative. As a Chickasaw-Choctaw artist, I create in a state of tension, suspended between worlds where solemnity and humor coexist. I am drawn to the ways truth reveals itself unexpectedly, and the trickster often makes an appearance in my work.
My practice extends beyond the canvas. I create commissioned works in thoughtful collaboration with collectors, institutions, and communities, grounding each piece in story, lineage, and place. I also lead workshops and immersive embodied metaphor experiences that invite participants to explore how symbolism shapes identity, memory, and meaning.
With more than 25 years of experience in arts education, I am also an international speaker, engaging audiences in conversations about art, Indigenous identity, storytelling, and the creative tension of living between worlds. I hold a BFA in Studio Art from Baylor University and an MFA from the University of Oklahoma, and I have been featured in Visual Voices: Contemporary Chickasaw Art, among other exhibitions across the United States.
